Volunteering FAQs

Is Malpractice Insurance available?

Yes! Malpractice insurance is available for volunteer attorneys representing eligible LSNF clients.

Am I obligated to take on a case?

No! Advice volunteers are not obligated to take on cases for clients. There are many other ways volunteer attorneys can help LSNF.

What resources are available for me as a volunteer?

LSNF helps to provide guidance, mentorship, staff support, and other resources to make it easier for you to support our work through volunteerism. Whether that is offering advice or taking on a case for full representation.

Do I have to use LSNF's online case management database?

We encourage all of our volunteers to learn and use some of the simple functions in our online case management database program. This helps LSNF maintain accurate records for our grantors.

Do I get to keep attorney fees?

Volunteer attorneys can collect and keep attorney fees from an adverse party, when appropriate.

What about litigation fund support?

Litigation fund support is very limited and used only when necessary.

LSNF's Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Plan

The Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) Program, also known as the PAI Volunteer Lawyers Project, was initiated as a pilot project in 1982 by the Volunteer Lawyers Project of The Florida Bar.

LSNF works closely with private attorneys throughout our 16-county service area to give legal assistance to low-income and vulnerable individuals. Through the Private Attorney Involvement Program (PAI), this cooperation takes several forms including coordinating volunteer attorney resources of time and/or financial support. Attorneys may also become members of the Partners in Service Program. The “Partners” Program gives government or private attorneys and law firms an opportunity to contribute money annually to support LSNF activities while fulfilling The Florida Bar’s Pro Bono Rule.
